Management is new.Its questions are not.

Read each management concept in plain words, beside a cited passage from India's classical texts that met the same problem. Then ask about it, in a community where every answer says how the writer knows.

Why do people put in effort?

Choose the answer closer to what you believe.

A · Modern · Victor Vroom, 1964

Expectancy theory

People put in effort when they believe it will lead to a result, and that the result is worth having.

B · Classical · Bhagavad Gītā 2.47

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन ।

“Your right is to the action alone, never to its fruits.”

Where they differ. Vroom makes the expected result the reason to act. The Gītā asks you to act well without making the result the reason.

Read two ways

Classical texts, read as arguments, not scripture.

Each modern idea sits beside a passage that met the same problem long before: what the passage adds, and where the two differ. Choose a theme.

Groupthink and advisers who rebuke

“Who can ruin the ruler who keeps advisers willing to rebuke him?” இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரை யாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமை யவர். Tirukkuṟaḷ 447
What it adds
Advisers willing to rebuke the leader: the check that groupthink removes.
Where they differ

The Kuṟaḷ describes a ruler's counsellors. Groupthink research explains why such voices fall silent inside cohesive groups.

Culture set from the top and the ruler's energy

“When the ruler is active, his servants rise with him; when he is careless, they are careless too.” राजानमुत्थितमनूत्तिष्ठन्ते भृत्याः । प्रमाद्यन्तमनुप्रमाद्यन्ति । rājānam utthitam anūttiṣṭhante bhṛtyāḥ; pramādyantam anupramādyanti. Arthaśāstra 1.19.1–2
What it adds
When the leader is active, the people are active; when careless, careless.
Where they differ

Kauṭilya speaks of a ruler and his servants. Culture theory adds founders' philosophy, reinforcement systems and socialisation.

Directing and kind words and generous care

“The world is at the word of one who can give with kind words and protect.” இன்சொலால் ஈத்தளிக்க வல்லார்க்குத் தன்சொலால் தான்கண் டனைத்திவ் வுலகு. Tirukkuṟaḷ 387
What it adds
Willing following won by kind words and generous care, not by force.
Where they differ

The couplet praises a ruler's manner. Leadership styles are a range of methods suited to different followers and situations.

How do you give feedback to someone older than you on your team?

He has been here eight years. I have been a manager for three months. Sana

I asked him what he would change first, before saying what I would. He had been waiting a long time for someone to ask.

Teams where people feel safe to speak up report more learning behaviour, so make the first conversation one where he can push back.

My first manager’s rule: praise in public, correct in private, and never in front of his juniors.

Disagrees because age isn’t the issue

Give it like any other feedback. Making his seniority the topic is what makes it awkward.

  1. Replies are grouped, never rankedEach sits under how it relates: answers, builds on, disagrees. Nothing climbs by votes.
  2. Every answer says what it rests onLived, Told and My view say so plainly. Documented needs a source that points to a page or an entry.
  3. Disagreeing needs a reasonIt comes first, so the argument stays on the idea.
